Thanks to Megan Hunt (HOTCUS) and James West (BAAS) for having me on this timely and inspirational podcast series for the Precarity Project. As an independent researcher with a full-time day job in secondary school education, it’s always been apparent to me that the idea of research as limited to the institutional frame of a university is not only limiting, but also increasingly unrealistic. This is why it’s been an honour and a pleasure to participate in this project, which gave me the opportunity to talk to like-minded people about the precarious nature of academic work and how I’m hoping to avoid its major pitfalls.
